Gavriil Vaschenko

Gavriil Vaschenko was born on June 20, 1928, in the Belarusian vilage Chikalovichi, Bragin district, Gomel region, Belarus.
 
1945-1948 – studied at the Kiev Art School, Ukraine;
1949-1955 – studied at the Lviv Institute of Decorative and Applied Arts;
1955-1960 – teacher at the Republican Art  School in Kishinev, Moldova;
1957 – joined the Union of Artists of the USSR; awarded as the laureate of youth and students festival in Moldova;
1960 – awarded with the medal "For Labor Merit";
1961 – returned to Belarus; started to work at the Belarusian Theater and Art Institute (now the Belarusian State Academy of Arts);
1965 – got the academic title of docent;
1969 – awarded with the bronze medal of the Exhibition of the National Economy Achievements (Moscow);
1975 – awarded with the Grekov Silver Medal, the gold medal of of the Exhibition of the National Economy Achievements;
1975-1995 – the Head of the Monumental Art Department of the Belarusian State Art and Theater Institute (now the Belarusian State Academy of Arts);
1978 – awarded with the title "The Honored Artist of the Belarusian Republic";
1980 – got the academic title of professor;
1984 – awarded with the State Prize;
1988 – awarded with the honorary title of People's Artist of the Belarusian Republic;
1992 – the International Biographical Center of Cambridge awarded him with the honorary title "Person of the Year ’1992";
1993 – the International Biographical Center of Cambridge awarded him with the honorary title of  Person of the 20th Century and personal silver medal;
1994 – the American Biographical Institute awarded him the title "Person of the Year ‘1994" and the gold medal;
1995 – awarded with the medal named after Francisk Skorina; elected as the Academic of Belarusian Academy of Fine Arts, Minsk;
2002 – State Art gallery of Gavriil Vaschenko was opened in Gomel.
2013 – the collection of painting "Courage" was nominated for the prize of the Union State in the field of literature and art in period of 2013-2014;
2013 – named as "the Honorary citizen of the city of Gomel".
February 14, 2014 Gavriil Vaschenko died.
 
In fact, Gavriil vaschenko did not live in Gomel, however, being a native of the Gomel region, he did a lot for the cultural life of the city. His personal gallery is located in Gomel. Moreover, in the last days of his life, he was awarded with the title of honorary citizen of Gomel. All facts mentioned above, allow us to place him to the category of "Artists of Gomel".
